Mentoring Preferences Questionnaire

Adapted from MINT TOOLS Mentoring Styles

Please pick a number between 1 and 5 to indicate your responses to the following statements, with 1 indicating "strongly disagree" and 5 indicating "strongly agree."
Sometimes it may be difficult to choose a number. Try to pick the closest to how you feel.

1: As a mentor, I prefer not to delve too deeply into the problems of my mentees as this can cause problems that I would rather avoid.

2: When I see that a mentee is worried about something, I make time to sit and ask them about it.

3: I give all kind of suggestions to my mentees with the expectation that they will choose the best suggestion that works for them.

4: For complicated problems I prefer to just give solutions to the mentee because the mentee does not yet have the capacity to make the best decisions.

5: As a mentor, I believe that my mentee and I should solve problems together, as the best solutions can come for either one of us.

6: I wait and see how mentees solve their own problems.

7: I give my mentees freedom to talk to me about their problems.

8: I see myself as someone who gives suggestions and allows my mentees to make choices themselves.

9: From my experience, I feel best suited to indicate how problems can be solved in the most efficient way.

10: In the mentoring relationship I abandon any hierarchy between me and a mentee so that we can share our contributions equally.

11: If a mentee is functioning badly I tend not to say anything: those problems often resolve themselves.
